So different from American lunchboxes! (chips/high in sugar fruit boxes/white bread sandwiches) That or they buy fatty greasy stuff in cafeterias (Not all but when I was in high school that was the deal-io).

This looks so good :)

mmm....i'm using my first bento tomorrow for the first day of school. Do u have any advice on keeping it warm? I just have a plastic bento and nothing to insulate it with. or does it just stay warm?

For the most part, bento is packed with the knowledge that it will cool down by the time the person gets around to eating it (or warm up if something cold is packed). If you wrap it up in a cloth that should help insulate it. There are also some sorts of ice packs that can be heated up as well which you can include wrapped up in the cloth.

The rainbow cake is in the bottom bento in the top corner right between the tamagoyaki and the tempura. It's a cake with layers of different colors. It's hard to see in the picture, but this one is yellow, green, and pink.

Tempura is covered with a very simple batter made out of flour and cold water. It's then deep fried. The batter is usually really lumpy. That combined with the fact that it's cold is why deep frying it makes it so funny shaped when it comes out. Normally batter is smooth and not as cold, so deep frying gives it a nicer "skin" like on onion rings.

Be sure not stir it too much. It's good if it's lumpy. If you stir it a lot, the flour begins to break down and the batter becomes really chewy instead of crispy.
